Valentines Mantel

I couldn’t be more pleased with my Valentines Mantel!

20130129-074515.jpg
A lot of the little projects I have been working on have come together here, along with a few thrifty finds. I have my crepe paper rosette floral balls sitting on chunky dark wood candle holders. They pair up quite nicely with my vintage sheet music candles.

20130129-075028.jpg
I added a red mini Moroccan lantern that I got for one dollar at a yard sale a few weeks ago. I am going with a “feathery friends” – lovebirds and angels theme.

20130129-075537.jpg Way over on the other side of the mantel I have my feathered heart topiary, more lovebirds (the ones on the end are salt and pepper shakers from the dollar store) and some other goodies. This is all topped off with my crepe paper heart and more lovebirds that have been perched up there since Christmas! And speaking of Christmas, nevermind the pile Christmas crap over in the corner.  Glad you can’t see that!  Hopefully I’ll get it put away by Easter next weekend.

Shoe Goo Part Two – DIY Shoe Repair With Shoe Goo

Another shoe saved thanks to Shoe Goo! I didn’t take a before shot because I didn’t think this DIY Shoe Repair was going to work. But it did!

20130115-164101.jpg
The bottom of this shoe broke in half somehow and I was so bummed! I love to wear these shoes in the summer, they are comfortable, not too high, and seem to go with everything. I tried fixing them with Tacky Glue and Super Glue and neither one held for more than 10 minutes. So I decided to try Shoe Goo as a last ditch effort before tossing them. I loaded the break with Shoe Goo and taped it together with painters tape.

20130115-164850.jpg
I left it like that for 10 days. I wore the shoes to work last Friday with jeans (yes it was cold, the things I do in the name of research) and they held. All day! They even survived a trip to the 99 Cent Store after work! I am so happy that I saved these shoes! Number one, I didn’t have the heart to throw them out. And number two, I have proved to myself again that I can save money by fixing it myself by doing DIY Shoe Repair With Shoe Goo.

Woo-hoo for Shoe Goo!

Cheesecake Factory Strawberry Martini

It’s New Year’s Eve and I made a Strawberry martini with some strawberry infused vodka a good friend made me for Christmas. I have never had one but apparently the Cheesecake Factory makes the most delicious strawberry martinis. I found lots of photos but couldn’t find the exact recipe. So I made up my own recipe for Cheesecake Factory strawberry martinis. From what I can tell they start with muddled strawberries.

Recipe for Strawberries Martinis
4 oz. strawberry infused vodka
4 oz. club soda
2 oz. Toriani Strawberry Syrup (I used sugar free)

Start by muddling (squishing) two strawberries in the bottom of a martini shaker. Combine ingredients in the shaker. Shake it up! Makes 1 yummy strawberry martini.

Cheers!

No Fear Fridays – Free Printable

Have you seen what the lovely and talented Kim is doing over at Reposhture?  She has created a weekly series called No Fear Fridays where each Friday she focuses on a topic having to do with fear.  She is taking her blog to the next level and using it to change women’s lives in a very personal way.  It is amazing, really.  Her blog was awesome as it was.  She has a great sense of style and creates beautiful things and does really well in Blogland.  It would be enough for most people but she wanted more.  She wanted to help women.  She wanted to help empower women.  So she started No Fear Fridays.  She listened to her heart and was guided to take a very big risk and start No Fear Fridays.   I am most grateful as these posts have had a very profound effect on me, and are changing my life for the better.  Inspired by No fear Fridays and the verses that Kim recommends reading, I created this No Fear Fridays – Free Printable:

Which is from 2 Chronicles 20:17.   I am happy to share with you at a 5×7 pdf.  You dont have to fight

Enjoy!

Living Redo: Day 45 – Serenity Prayer Printable

Day 45 and we’re done! I made my first ever chalk paint, and painted the top of the dumpster dive dresser that is now the entertainment center. I also finished my chandelier and hung a capiz shell light fixture that I shopped my room for. This is all before and after work! Posts on everything will be coming soon! Back to the Serenity Prayer Printable.

No, this Living Redo didn’t drive me into a twelve step program. But it has been a serious challenge for me in a lot of ways. Big girl stuff. I had to reassess balancing achieving my goals with having a happy life. Before I would have pushed myself and shut everything else out in order to achieve my goal. I took another approach this time and reevaluated things and extended my deadline. It was the right decision and I feel better for it. It was also challenging in the fact that you have to live in the living room and eat in the dining room so I had to work around things and keep tidying up instead of leaving a big mess from project start to finish. And speaking of big messes, when I am in project mode I don’t have the time or energy to clean or do yardwork. So aside from cleaning the bathroom last weekend my place is pretty much a pigsty and that is an insult to pigs everywhere! All of this has left me with such a feeling that everything is so completely out of control that things will never be right again. Hence the Serenity Prayer. It makes me feel so much better; it calms me down and I breathe a big sigh of relief. I decided to make a new printable:

Serenity Prayer

Here is the file I am honored to share with you:Serenity

I am so happy this project is done. I can’t wait to get everything tidied up and to take some good pictures. Now when does the cleaning crew get here? Oh, that’s me? Well, I guess it will be next weekend then!

Living Redo: Day 44 – Silkscreened Ceiling!

I hit it hard today. Got 2 projects done! I worked on my chandelier (almost finished) and I silkscreened the ceiling. When I bought it I fell in love with the design (Martha Stewart Floral Paisley) and I didn’t look closely at the package and I honestly thought I was buying a stencil. The silkscreen worked really well, as the screen seemed to regulate the paint quite a bit. The difference with stenciling is that you have to lightly load the brush, and with screen printing it worked much better with a LOT of paint. Perfect!
I taped the edges with painters tape even though it is self adhesive.

20121014-221249.jpg
I pounced the daylights out of it with a sponge pouncer.

20121014-221516.jpg
For the next area I mixed up Martha Stewart glitter paint with a few drops of green acrylic paint and used a different screen that came wit the set. I was so pleased to find out the glitter goes through the screen! I did the same with pink paint and free handed dots using a pencil eraser. To the dots I added a bit of bling.

20121014-222446.jpg
I got what I wanted! Glitter and bling on the ceiling!

Living Room Redo: Day 37 – 99 Cent Trash Can Chandelier

Today I hopped over to the hallway and made a chandelier out of a trash can! I did this because I am moving the chandy that has been in the hallway to the dining room. I started with a fluted trash can that I got at the 99 Cent Store and a base of a light fixture that came with the house.

20121007-204418.jpg
I spray painted them with a Rustoleum hammered metal finish.
I cut a hole in the top:

20121007-204717.jpg
And hung chandelier crystals that I found in a box while I was out walking Bella one day.

20121007-212031.jpg
I hung it onto the base (after I scrubbed the ceiling and walls with TSP) with some hooks I made out of jewelry findings.

20121007-213910.jpg

20121007-214021.jpg
I originally made this as a dofer. A dofer is a term my dad used to use for a temporary fix – “It’ll dofer now”. I was planning on redoing a chandy that I got at a yard sale for this space. But I have to say I am kind of falling in love! This dofer might become a keeper!

Living Room Redo – Day 30: Coastal Mantel

Day 30. It is coming together! Finally! I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel so much better. There is still a lot to do but I am getting a handle on it. I put a couple of big projects on hold to start bringing things together this weekend. I got all of my craft stuff put away and started decorating. I’d like to share my Coastal mantel today. OK so I know everyone is decorating their mantels for fall but I’m excited anyway!

It has some thrift store treasures, some projects I have done, and some new things.

Living Room Redo – Day 20: Giant Fabric Rosette Pillow

I mentioned yesterday that I was working on a pillow inspired by one of my favorite bloggers. Have you seen the pillows made by Kammy at Kammy’s Korner? This girl has got it going on! She has made pillows with fabric rosettes, and large fabric rosettes made out of curtains and bridesmaid skirts and more! Check out her awesome pillows now (but come back to see mine).
Here is the one that I made:

20120920-212535.jpg
I started with a pillow I got at the thrift store for $1.99. I made a fabric rosette from an old torn sheet that I had been saving. I used my no sew, no hot glue method, basically starting with a knot and twisting and turning and gluing as you go along. To make a giant fabric rosette, I used 3 strips of sheet about 2 inches in diameter. As I got to the second and third strips I added glue on each twist and let it dry upside down. I cut the knot off and added Velcro dots because I am going to have to wash the pillow again at some point and I don’t think Elmer’s Glue will make it through the wash.

20120920-220610.jpg
I pressed the flower to the pillow. And done!

Living Room Redo – Day 18: Cheers To 100 Followers – Coastal Martini

I have been busy working on my Living Room Redo. Okay, I didn’t get much done on it today because I was at work, but I found out something great today. I have reached 100 followers! I am so happy! I thought of it for so long, and had a cheers recipe ready, but it didn’t happen so I kind of gave up on it and used the recipe for the Martini of the Month last month. But tonight I came home and got into mixologist mode and made a Coastal Martini. Just one. Cuz it’s a school night. Cheers to 100 followers!

Recipe for Coastal Martinis
4 oz. Pinnacle Whipped vodka
4 oz. Hypnotiq
4 oz. club soda
3 oz. Toriani Coconut Syrup

Combine ingredients in a martini shaker. Shake it up, shake it up, baby! Makes 1 beautiful aqua blue martini. Same color as my walls and tastes like vacation! OK, now back to DIY…
