Placemat Clutch Purse Number 2

Part of my look for less for the 50′s party I went to this weekend was a placemat clutch purse. I made another placemat clutch purse last week, so I am calling this beauty number 2. Here is how I made clutch purse number 2 out of a placemat. I got this cute swirly placemat at the 99 Cent Store:

I folded it the way I wanted it and creased it, pressing it into shape. I ran a bead of tacky glue along the side edges.

And pressed it together and weighted it down with phone books. Who says there is no use for phone books anymore? ;)

A side note, I looked at a lot of tutorials online, and they all called for hot glue. I have a bit of a phobia about hot glue guns so I decided to try Tacky Glue. It held up perfectly!
Back to business, after the glue was dry I added self sticking Velcro dots for closure.

It needed a little something so I added a vintage looking brooch. Perfect! Here is the finished purse:

50′s Party Accessories – My Look For Less

I only spent a few dollars on these accessories for the 50′s party that I went to yesterday.

I made another clutch purse from a placemat, made another headband from a tie, wore some hand me down black gloves, put on false eyelashes that I had, and wore blue eyeshadow of course (from the 99 Cent Store). I’ll be posting on most of these bargains this week…

My Look For Less – $90 Bracelet For $7

I saw this bracelet in a catalog and loved it! But $90? I don’t think so.

So I made it! I got the leather cuff at Joann’s for $3.99 and the pendant at Michaels for $2.50.

I glued them together with some E-6000 and I’ve got a fashionista cuff at a bargain-ista price!

Me As A Fairy

So there have been a lot of fairy references here lately. What’s it all about? Well, tomorrow I am getting highlighted at work, not a big deal everyone gets highlighted sooner or later, only now its my turn. Instead of getting interviewed (which I would not like) I decided to create something (which I do like) and do a Powerpoint presentation about my life. It has been an amazing experience to try to sum up my whole life outside of work into a three minute segment. I had a lot of ideas which didn’t make the cut. What did make the cut was…family, my thoughts on life, and things I have created. Here is the final slide, with me as a fairy, making the world a better place with things I have created encapsulated in bubbles and getting sent out to the world:

I love this!!!

My Look For Less – $130 Earrings For $9!

Image

I am so excited about these earrings! I saw them in a catalog and just knew I had to make them! BTW – they were $130!!!It wasn’t easy, I don’t usually make jewelry, so I really had to think it through but the end result was sooo worth it. When I first saw these, I thought “Wait a minute, aren’t these the same earrings I saw at the 99 Cent Store?” And they were! $130? I think not!

So I went the next day and had to dig through multiple bins but found a few pair. Now on to Michaels to search for the add-one to dress them up. The originals have citrine (which they didn’t have), and I don’t wear much yellow, but I do wear lots of aqua (which they did have), so I opted for some gorgeous glass beads with swirls of turquoise, white, and a tiny bit of citrus.

So onto the project.

Here is what I did:

The earrings I found were gold so I spray painted them. I gave them 2 coats of paint in Rustoleum Espresso. Then I dabbed on some Martha Stewart metallic paint in Copper for a bit of shine.

Then I wrapped the beads. I started with 26 gauge gold wire, made a loop at the top, threaded it through the bead and wrapped the rest around. Tried to make it look like the original, and it does, but a bit more dense. Then I attached the beads to the earrings with a jump ring that came in the kit I bought.

The last step was to switch out the wires for gold ones. All done! I have a whole new respect for jewelry makers. It’s hard! It hurts the eyes, the little pieces get lost, and the fingers get in the way sometimes. But the end result is bliss.

My Look For Less – Eva Longoria

So I saw this look in InStyle Magazine and I new I had to do it! She had on skinny jeans, a black blazer, black tank top, and black platform shoes.

InStyle put the look together for $245, but I did it for much less!

  • I got the skinny jeans on ebay for $10,
  • the black tank top was a hand-me-down (or hook-me-up) $0,
  • the shoes were from Payless $16,
  • and the blazer came from White House Black Market and I have had for so so long that I don’t remember how much it cost.  I am going to guess around $40.

So I am going to value this look at $66, and I got lots of compliments, which rocks!
